Jan Šír is Research Fellow at the Department of Russian and East European Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the Institute of International Studies at the Charles University in Prague. In addition, he is managing editor of the quarterly Acta Universitatis Carolinae - Studia Territorialia. His research covers political, security, and energy developments of the successor states to the former Soviet Union, with a particular focus on Central Asia. He has extensive expertise in applied research, including four one-year research projects commissioned by the Czech Foreign Ministry as well as a three-year research project funded by the Charles University Grant Agency. His articles in English, Russian, Czech and Ukrainian have appeared in prominent refereed journals and volumes, such as Acta Slavica Iaponica, Central Asia and the Caucasus, The China and Eurasia Forum Quarterly, Perspectives on European Politics and Society, and Politeks – Politicheskaia ekspertiza. He is a co-author of Dismantling Totalitarianism? Turkmenistan under Berdimuhamedow (Washington, DC: Central Asia- Caucasus Institute, 2009).
